A smoking satire on industry lobbying
The new film Thank You for Smoking follows a fictional American tobacco lobbyist, as he defends the rights of smokers to double-speak and deep irony. The satire is based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Buckley.
Nick Naylor, played by Aaron Eckhart, works for the dubiously named Academy of Tobacco Studies. He is an expert on the system, streamlining spouting optimistic, as he invited people to give a chance to smoke.
Thank You for Smoking is the first feature film 28 years, director Jason Reitman. He is the son of veteran director Ivan Reitman, producer of hits such as Ghost Busters and Animal House.
If Reitman has come into the Buckley’s satirical novel, he was struck by the book and its nature in advance, and fascinated by the idea of a comedy about someone who sells death.
