Debate on Gay Marriage clouds real problem of equal treatment

For both Church and State, the treatment of homosexual couples was one of the hot topics of summer.

On last Thursday, the Roman Catholic Church cubits the volume of its firm rejection of any recognition of homosexual partnerships. And the pending’s Episcopal Church to confirm their vote of the first openly gay bishop at the risk of touching a separatist movement in the appeal against the decision. Later this week, the Episcopal Church’s national governing body for coordination could be whether the authorization of rites for blessing gay unions.

Not content to offer personal issues moralising at the church, more than 75 members of Congress now pressing for a definition of marriage to the USA to the Constitution. It would specifically bar gay marriage and prohibit any authorization unions. President Bush also weighed into the debate at his press conference last week. During chastising participation in the political gay-bashing, he said he could resume the legislation codified as marriage, even if these laws are already on the books at the national level and in 37 countries. Aides say he is also taking into account support for a revision of the definition of marriage.

As a matter of freedom of religion, churches have a unique right to its own doctrine of crafts in marriage and the implementation of this internally as they wish. But the government in power is the most right to the protection of law-abiding citizens against discrimination - rather than putting up with all the theology of public opinion.

Bases discrimination against homosexuals is a serious problem. Historically, government and private sector have special rights, who are married, the obligation of treatment, same-sex couples as second-class citizens in many areas. The disparities between the rich regions of property, inheritance, child custody, confidentiality of the talks, domestic violence, protection, tax advantages and wrongful death benefits.

A dispute achieved equal rights for same-sex couples in Vermont three years ago, more than 300 posts of benefits and guarantees of state law and a 1000 federal law is limited to heterosexual . Cases increase in the same look now questions about the decisions in Massachusetts and New Jersey.

If the Supreme Court of Vermont decided the rule of the Constitution does not allow such discrimination, the legislature responded by creating “bourgeois unions” as permanent anniversary. The legislation currently in California, will partway along the same lines, Hawaii and Connecticut have already yielded some partners of same-sex couples benefits.

When a question of theology, views of marriage can - and do -. Reform Judaism, universalism and unitary United Church of Christ, even official sanction of trade unions, like most gay Metropolitan Community Churches. While a growing number of other Protestant churches Main Line silent bless gay unions, the national denominations have not yet officially recognized.

Regarding the state, but marriage is first and foremost a recognition of a contract between two citizens.

Critics of unions, gay, under what name, who say they defend the institution of marriage. But divorce among heterosexuals is nearly 50%, and their acceptance of life develops. These trends are a major threat to the institution as a recognition of the obligation debt, homosexual couples to more equal treatment under the law.
